My First Project-Edelrid Adapter on a Camping Gaz for a Jetboil

For today's topic, it would be focused on the Edelrid Adaptor for Non-Threaded Valve Type Gas Canisters. I bought 2 pcs from Needlesports.

As a little equipment junkie, I have been eyeing on the Jetboil Personal Flash Kit for quite awhile. Falling for it after reading reviews over and over again on AdventureInsider and Youtube videos. As a personal kit for boiling water and simple cooking, its really efficient. I will leave the specifics out of this as it's the adapter I'm focused on. This post is a troubleshoot/further review from Pedaldamnit's post . His post covers extensively of the various compatibility issues with the Jetboil and offers all the alternatives. You can check it out. It was from his post that I got the Edelrid Adaptor.

In today's coverage, these are the equipment I have with me:

In this picture, I have the following:
1) Ace Camp Cooking Kit - 2 pots, 1 pan
2) Camping Gaz Stove
3) Camping Gaz Non-threaded Gas Canisters 230g & 450g
4) Full Jetboil Flash Kit (I lost the jave press kit, damn!)
5) Edelrid Gas Adapter

A few pictures of the adapter:

The Gas Canisters and the Original Stove:

As threaded valve gas canisters are not available in Singapore, these are the only available alternative. Each of these cost about $3-$5, depending on where you get them. It is impossible to ship gas canisters which are only available in most parts of Europe, Australia & America. In Asia, it is near impossible to get them. Thus, Jetboil owners in SG may not fully utilize them. Upon receiving the valve:

First up, Putting on the Valve. This is one step that you CANNOT make any mistakes. Reason being that this was the first cause of problems. I will begin by explaining:

Noting that the 2 parts to focus are the legs and the lock.
Simple steps: Push adapter down, hold legs in place, twist to about 90 degrees to lock
Important to note:
** Do not move the legs. It will lead to:
** Over Tightening. NEVER EVER Over Tighten. Will cause it to be loose.
Unlike the normal gas canister to stove when you will feel the "lock-on", this adapter can be over tightened easily for those who are afraid at first.
Some pictures:

The adapter will not twist as much independently. Until pushed on to gas valve

Left: Adapter sitting on top the valve. Right: Adapter Screwed on. Yes, there is a gap, but its meant to be that way. Don't Worry.

 Final Product!

_______________________________________________________________________

Now, the scary part. Yes, I had 2 not-so-safe starts with the adapter, so let me tell you what to watch out for. The last thing we want is...... KA-BOOOOOOM!!!!

1) Do not keep tightening the adapter. Once you have the adapter pushed in & twist-locked, STOP. The legs should stay where they are after you've twist-locked it.

2) Attaching the Stove: The jetboil stove is not the best stove, but for a personal kit, it works fine. Make sure your jetboil flame control valve is OFF. Why? When we keep our jetboil, our valve must turn a little to flip the control valve in. If the valve is ON a little, gas will just keep on coming out. Once you've STARTED screwing on the stove, somewhere near maximum tightness, You will hear a gas release. CONTINUE TIGHTENING TILL TIGHT = no gas leaking.
BUT!!!! Remember, the adapter does NOT move. (look at the legs)
** Incident 1: I ignited the system after tightening so many rounds; till i felt it was tight. wrong move. Once the first spark came, flame surge out right between the adapter and stove. Thank God my hand hair is still there:)

3) Once its all together, wait for awhile, hear for gas leaks/wait for gas to clear. Then ignite the stove.
You might want to test the flame control to ensure it is connected properly. The last thing you want is a small flame. Incident 2: thought all was done well, until I realize that the flame was constant no matter how much I turned the control valve. Giving me the thought that it was damaged or it doesn't work.

4) When removing, reverse the steps. Gas will leak when removing the adapter from the gas canister. Make sure no naked flame or another lighted stove is near when doing so.

That should sum up the Edelrid Adaptor on Jetboil 101. Hope it helps all and once again, do make sure you dispose of the gas canister properly with Jetboil's Crunch It
Enjoy your next mini expedition or hammock day safely with your Jetboil.
(people do get jealous..hahaha)

It has been an Uphill (a little down) Ride.

For the past week, ever since Student Leadership Training Camp (SLTC), I have been thinking about the words that Mr Leong said to me. It still haunts me everyday in a good way. It keeps me reminded of my motivations and my beliefs. When I say Redshirts has practically set my path for the next 10 years, it's no joke. I've grown towards running Redshirts to taking care of the kids. I know that they are the people I care about. I feel that looking at the juniors from a point of view of caring over mentoring/leading serves us to look at a much bigger picture much more sweeter.

Final Initiative as Redshirt Alumni.

This is the last official event that I have planned for the 5th and 6th batch of redshirts.
We had it as Pasir Ris Park and took one of the "un-occupied" BBQ pits and started off.

It all began with failed pancake making, too much tidbits and too little food. Sorry kids, I'm low on budget for this! But it was all in the effort to bring "Encouragement" food for each other. Well, Oreos, Mamee, Twisties, Snacks and Kopiko didnt work out fully, but the glass bottle drinks "Yam-Seng" did push up all the atmosphere. All the chit chat and attempts to make pancakes definitely worked out well.

The whole purpose of the day was to tell them about their journey ahead as Redshirts as well as to encourage them on as they take their major exams. Using what I have learnt throughout my personal Redshirt journey, I have shared with them truthfully what I felt for them as well as to really motivate them.

The environment was just great! Dark but not too dark, Windy but not too loud, Not noisy at all, mozzies at its' least. We started with recollecting together their SLTC experience as a whole. 1 plus and 1 delta per person. One by one they shared and the key to this being a success was the common identification of events that happened throughout their camp. This was key as a built up to the next step.

I dropped a question to them,"Has being a redshirt benefited you?"
Everyone said yes.
"One thing we can do for something that has benefited us is to give back and show appreciation. How can you give back if that's the case?" I dropped this question but none has the answer. I really used Hakim's and my own experience as a senior, a friend, a Redshirt to inspire the to think deeper. I see them not just a my juniors, but my own friends, as well as my kids.

We then proceeded to link to their upcoming adversities, challenges and mountains; their major exams. Hakim and myself are not the best academic examples for them to follow. But what we really want is for them to face the next few months with such tenacity and courage so that they can do well. Stress is inevitable. Stress from parents, Stress from teachers, Stressing themselves.

We walked towards the breakwaters and stood in a line. All quiet and serious, I shared the story of the Carrot, Egg & Coffee. When I ended, I asked to look at a kelong directly infront. It was the only place with lights on in the middle of the sea. Looking at that, I asked them,"right where we are is dark, uncertain. But where the light is, there are answers and directions. Think of where you are now and what you want to achieve when you reach the light. When you're ready, turn around and find me"

The next activity when they were ready was writing a letter to self. This activity was from my internship preparation and it really had a big effect. Dropping them the envelope and paper, their focus was on what they want to achieve in the next 6 months, and how. To my amazement, the serenity of the moment and the environment made the moment so special and serious. Everyone did it and took the whole activity seriously. Some even kept writing till I had to end the whole activity as I was eating in to the time.

We decided to keep the letter sealed, unread till the 26th Dec, Boxing Day. It is a letter that would ultimately motivate them till the end of the year. I do not know what they wrote, but I know if they took it seriously, it would work wonders.

It all ended just like that on a focused note for everyone. And as they packed up and left, I felt satisfied after the whole thing. I left them to go home on their own, of course the gentlemen must make sure the ladies got home safe, when they could "debrief" themselves and let the whole experience sink in. I think the picture in my head for the next few months would be them. Sec 3 redshirts, You all as well. Mount Kinabalu will be an exciting time for you. Sec 2 redshirts, your time to step up. I believe You all can.

Beliefs and Values

Being a Red Shirt Student Leader in Coral Sec for the past 6 years has really led me to realizing my goals, dreams and aspirations. It has opened to me the different doors of thinking and doing, leading and mentoring, building and inspiring.

I always refer to the red shirts in school as my kids; just like the teachers do. Coming from a generation where the fathers are absent, I have taken it upon myself to take care of these groups of students that have taken the bold step to set the standard and become Red Shirt Student Leaders in Coral Sec. As I will say," I don't care about them until they put on the redshirt".

Being in the pioneering batch of red shirts, we've seen the past 7 batches of Red Shirts. Be it good or bad, there are just so many takeaways one can have if we take it seriously. But for the 2011 and 2012, it has really led me to a level of really understanding "What Redshirts is Really All About".

Looking back at batch 5, 6, 7, it has really brought me a level where teaching is no longer the main aim here. Maintaining the Standard and Mentoring the kids is.
Looking at them grow when the first enter school till they graduate means a great deal to me. Not being emotional here but how many people get to enjoy these moments? ;)

Speaking to Hakim and Sattish the past few days really set my heart on mentoring these kids. Reminding them that there is more than studies, more than camps, more than responsibilities as a student leader that makes them so special. It is the choices and decisions that they make and mindsets that they have that can make the biggest difference. I.E. looking at just 2 of the sec 4s taking O levels studying till their eyes are balling out makes you really feel the heart pain. (not being emotional here;)

Looking at the VAST amount of potential and abilities in the current sec3s, they really impressed me and the alumni, every single one of them! From the first time I knew them till now, they have really done well. Everyone of them deserves the shirt and the experience. From the short, smart and hardworking to the tall, funny and resilient ones, I want to be able to influence their next few steps in Coral.

Upcoming Saturday is the Grad event for batch 6. I really don't know how it will turn out. But I really hope to encourage them to do well for their important in school. It's a small effort but it does make a difference in their lives.

This was how my journey started. And it is going to be hitting a wall soon (NS). How will I get over it?
Only my motivation will.
Praying hard to go to Mount Kinabalu this year with you kids. It is only RIGHT to do so. I have went through the whole year with you all, I want you all to have the full experience and to show you all that I truly care about you all.

I end with this.
People, teachers, friends, students always ask, "Why do you keep coming back to Coral?"
I used to say,"I want to give back to the school what it has given me"
Now I say,"You will only understand when you've gone through it yourself"

I don't know if I will really go back to Coral to teach,
But 1 thing is for sure,
I will keep Red Shirts going.

We Live in A World...

"We Live in a World that is Built to Judge Us By Our Greatest Achievements and Condemn Us for Our Worst Failures, You Wrestle with the Question, Was it Worth It? Out Here, Neither Success or Failure can be Taken Back to the World. We are Stuck Here in Our Minds At Devil's Bay"

As the weeks count down...

When people go through the motion everyday, it just makes life not interesting an exciting.
Similarly, when i decided to take the Diploma in Outdoor & Adventure Learning, I decided this is how my life would be.

Full of Risk
Full of Reward
Full of Adventure
Full of Inspiration

Without these, how do you measure how you lead a fulfilling life???

When we take a look how so many different athletes in the world do what they do, they just inspires me to find that place in my heart that just shouts "THIS IS WHAT YOU NEED TO BE DOING, EVERYDAY"

Being a gear junkie, I personally visit most outdoor brand's FB page. But what really set it apart was the deep thought that was in Steph Davis's Mind when she attempted this big project and shared about her life story.
Video Link: http://vimeo.com/43085682
Its 20 mins, but it was the first 10 that got me to the next 10 mins.

Back to reality vs personal goals.

Living in such a "corrupt" country where certain decisions in life have already been decided for you, it sucks.
Hearing friends after friends talk about their choices and life path for the next 10 years really sickens me.
With 2 years of NS for guys, locals fighting for places in local Universities and the insane amount of money required just for a young adult to survive in SG. Plus, when the traditional mindset of family hits you hard, it just makes it all the more confusing.

Classic SG route: Finish Poly/JC - NS - UNI/WORK - WORK - GF - MARRIED - HDB Flat/Car - WORK - WORK - WORK till you get your pension fee - RETIRE.

There is no point in life if thats the case. I mean where's the meaning of living your life to the fullest? Live UnBound. Restrictions here there everywhere in the country.

Choosing to live life the fullest and achieving what you want is ALL that matters!!!!
Living each day like its your last makes it all worthwhile to achieve something everyday makes you feel so much better. For me yesterday, I went to church, went to support her and all, make sure everything is alright, planned out plans and accompanied her grocery shopping & home. But this one instance when I helped an old expat at the train station to the right directional train to his destination and talked to him. He was grateful to this small favor I did for him and his 'thank you' made my day all the more fulfilling.

I ain't no preacher, motivational speaker, life/success coach, role model, inspiration to anyone.
I'm just trying to make sense to everyone.

"It's about Survival of the Fittest". Yes, in the business world.
Outrageously NO to me to LIFE.

Living It Fulfilling Everyday!

The Happy Man taught me that yesterday & 67 year old grandmother inspired to discover life as she is still discovering hers.

To end, Your purpose in life is not to please others. Please Yourself By Living it to the Fullest. Don't Let Yourself Down. Don't care about others yet.

This lady just taught me about hanging on to things that hold dear to us.

________________________________________________________________________
Note to Her:
Whether its possible between us, its up to us. But what sets everything apart is our willingness to live Unbound by the things that holds us down.
Like what my teachers always say " Leaders don't give problems, Leaders give Solutions "

Time to prove the world wrong about living your dreams*!
** except for the dream for all guys to be an astronaut:)

Till Next Week, May your Week Start & End with an Adventure of Your Own.

Note To Self:

“Some of the biggest challenges in relationships come from the fact that most people enter a relationship in order to get something: they're trying to find someone who's going to make them feel good. In reality, the only way a relationship will last is if you see your relationship as a place that you go to give, and not a place that you go to take.”

- Anthony Robbins

I think this serves as a reminder to myself and not to be selfish when it comes to such situations. Knowing that only the strong will survive and build on his own pillars of character & beliefs.

Do not pray for easy lives. Pray to be stronger men.
Till the next challenge arises,
